LOCATION TIPS: Notes on selecting
your shooting environment.
The MOST IMPORTANT THINGS are that:
-
THE ROOM IS EVENLY LIT
-
THE CAMERA IS AT YOUR EYELINE and
-
YOU CAN BE CLEARLY HEARD
Casting Directors are not expecting any fancy set up. They are simply expecting that they can BOTH SEE and HEAR you clearly.
- Identify a location for your session where there is a solid-color background. It could be a small conference room at work, your bedroom,
office, garage, living room, etc.
- Ensure you have enough light. Ideally two sources with one to serve as the Master, or Key Light, and another to serve as an Accent light.
If there are multiple ceiling lights that may suffice but having something, on-hand, like a torchiere floor lamp or desk lamp near the camera will help quite a bit, especially if you can move
it.
- Ensure you have two feet in front of the wall to stand and perform, with another 2-4 feet in front of you for the camera. Sometimes,
putting the tripod on a desk or table will help with getting it to your eye level.
- Make sure that there is no distracting sound like people having a loud meeting in the next room, the air conditioner/fan blasting,
people walking through a heavy-traffic door, etc.
- Have your Plug-in or bluetooth headset on-hand in case a microphone might be useable with the phone or tablet. In most cases, it isn't needed, but if it is, you'll be glad to have it
